Tar Heel, NC, home to Smithfield Packing, the largest slaughterhouse in the United States. Activists join the North Carolina Save Movement from many different states to pour their hearts out.
"Everyone finds a place at the crossroads where we wait for trucks. Some people stand along Highway 87, where traffic is heavy but fast. Others stick to the intersection, where they can rush to cars, hail drivers, pass them a vegan pamphlet, and maybe talk with them. Others file down the country road, where tall grass irritates the ankles, and where you can see the trucks approaching. You learn to distinguish log trucks from animal haulers, and then, after an hour or two, you can distinguish pig trucks from chicken a quarter mile away. Sometimes they come at once, two chicken trucks, a pig truck, two pig trucks, a truck full of baby pigs, more chicken trucks, and everyone scrambles trying to connect with each animal, but there are too many. There are always too many."
